Who Am I?
Defining myself? I define myself by the challenges I have faced and successfully overcame in my past and currently overcoming in my present. I have been challenged with minor and major obstacles in my life but at the end of each obstacle I get stronger with each one I come face to face with.
I was born in a rural city known as Martinez, California to immigrant parents Justino and Karina Hernandez. My parents immigrated to this country wanting a better lifestyle for them and their future family. When I was born my dad was working tirelessly in the fields picking any kind of fruit to make ends meet for his new family . When my mom got pregnant again with my sister Kimberly my dad decided to go look for another job. Luck was with him and little by little my dad got better and better jobs each time our family grew more and more.
By 2007 my family consisted of my dad, my mom, 2 sisters, and a brother. We were living the American Dream until reality hit us, and hard. My dad was getting deported to Mexico. During that time I was eleven and I had siblings of ages 8, 2, and a 5 month old brother. In April of 2007 my dad was taken unfairly from our home in Elk Grove by ICE. I was told for the first couple of months that my dad was in San Francisco working but in reality he was in the Yuba City County Jail serving time for being a hard working immigrant. By June I was told the truth about my dads whereabouts. We visited him after that and seeing him helpless, scared, and faithless made me feel extremely aggravated, hopeless and beyond terrified. I am the oldest meaning I had the obligation of being “in charge” of my siblings and my mom while my dad was away. I was put through a lot that year mentally, physically, as well as emotionally.
To this day I haven’t gotten over what happened in 2007. My younger sister of 14 and I are living in this country without our family. Our parents as well as our other 2 siblings are in Mexico struggling to have a stable economy as well as a home. Our family was broken up unfairly but just like my dad I will better my life little by little despite all the odds.
From 2007 up to now I am more then motivated to be someone successful in life. I want to make my parents proud of me, set the bar high for my siblings to surpass me, and I want to prove everyone wrong about me. I know what I want in life and I will accomplish every single one of my goals and dreams. Thanks to my obstacles and my family I am who I am today.
